This book illustrates some of the changes in the villages and communities of Burniston, Cloughton, Hayburn Wyke, Staintondale and Ravenscar that are situated on the picturesque North Yorkshire coast. Each village has its own distinct character, from the tiny community of Hayburn Wyke, a favourite picnicking ground set in a wooded dell, to the 'town that never was' perched on the lofty cliffs of Ravenscar overlooking the spectacular sweep of Robin Hood's Bay. Prior to the opening of the Scarborough & Whitby Railway the pace of village life was slow and continued to be so until the arrival of the motor car and public transport. But the railway had a profound effect on the villages in many ways as it gave access to a glorious coastline that had hitherto been considered almost inaccessible. The changes and variety in rail and road transport are illustrated in this book.
