Romney did not come to London provided with references or introductions, nor with much money, and the consequence was that for the first ten years of his life in town it was a struggle for him to do any more than keep himself and remit small sums to his wife in Kendal. He seems to have known only two persons in London, neither of whom was in a position to do much to assist him.
