Civilization in which the roots of classical culture were embedded; and the fact that much of this information is still to be sought in reports of private societies, or in special volumes which are not yet published in this country, will perhaps be accepted as an apology for this attempt to epitomize such recent information, and excuse the hope that this small volume may help to fill a lacuna in the history of early classic art.
