Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The predominance of illustrations from architecture is due not merely to the fact that these chapters are based on lectures to architects; but also to the fact that the styles are most clearly exhibited in the progress of architecture as the mistress art. It is hoped that the Books Recommended will enable the reader to supply for himself the illustrations from the other arts which he finds lacking in this work.
