Sabine Baring-Gould was an English hagiographer, antiquarian, novelist and eclectic scholar. He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being "e;Onward, Christian Soldiers"e; and "e;Now the Day Is Over"e;. 'English Folk-Songs for Schools' contains fifteen ballads, twenty-six songs and twelve infant's songs all in separate form. This collection has been made to meet the requirements of the Board of Education, and is composed of melodies strictly pertaining to the people, to which words have been set, as closely adhering to the original as was possible.
