Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The contents of this volume, consisting mainly of papers read before The Plainsong and Mediwval Music Society embody opinions for which, necessarily, the writers are themselves alone responsible, but they endeavour to present to English readers some outlines of the theory of plainsong set forth in the publications issued by the rr. Pp. Benedictines of the Abbey of Solesmes, Sarthe, France. The conclusions on a few minor points may be matters of controversy, but with these exceptions they are those which have won the adhesion of the great majority of Continental students. Certain repetitions in the contents of the various chapters are unavoidable, but there is, perhaps, not much harm in this defect, as it may serve to enforce necessary truths.
