Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. It has pleased me greatly to be told that my little book has helped the younger members of my former profession to write better. As an editor I have been cognizant Of many instances of improvement on the part of contributors, because their eyes have been Opened to the need for intelligence and care in writing. AS I said in the preface to the first edition, my hope is to make evident the good results that come from taking pains in the use'of language. That hope has been justified.
