Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Once again I send out this little book. The motive is as fresh as ever, and the desire greater - to be of use to such as wish to speak well. Confidence in its fit ness also has been confirmed by still more testimonies to the service it has rendered. One thing, however, of an opposite sort has grown upon me - the Wonder and unhappiness Of seeing with what indifference many who look forward to public speaking seem to regard the need Of preparation, and how unaware they are of the detail, the thoroughness, and persistency re quired in it. The first difficulty apparently is to convince a man that there is anything faulty in his speech, and the next to induce him to begin at the beginning with determination to master everything. At first sight it seems incredible and might be thought Offensive when plainly written down, but it is literally true that even the work of the infant school has frequently to be done for themselves by men who have already donned the robe of the public orator.
