This first edition, usually described as an octave volume,isinfact squarto, printedon smafl'sheetsof paper foldedis four. Itcomnstsoftitle-page, onpp. Illtov, prefacepp.viitox1v, fiy-title with dramatic penance on back, and pp. 4 to 104 of text. There was printer's name on it. The second edition Is an octavo, -with title, 2 pages If dedication, 11 pages of preface, fly-title with dramatic persons, and text pp 3 to 103. The title-page has an imprint at back, London Printed byc. H. Reynell, Broad Street, Golden Square, which is repeated at the end of the book. The title-pages of both editions are reproduced opposite. This is the one work Of Shelleys whereof two editions were published during his life time; andthemisperhaps firmergroundhereforatextthsn inanyotherd hisworks. Thefirstedition hasa few errors of the press incidentalto the Italian compositors' ignorance Of English but there was probably much In deviation from the ms. Here than in the works printed in England, beam: the compositors would not know how to deviate and Shelley's compondm shews that he bestowed great care on the work. The second edition ifs lea suspect than most Of the books printed in England in Shelley's absence, probably because it was printed from a slightly revised copy of the first edition, in which case there would not be the many questionable places that a 118. Pt! Sents for a printer to exercise his ingenuity on. Still there are very numerous.
