AN apology for undertaking a work, from some incompetency, is almost as common as a preface. Such an apology, however, common as it is, the present writer feels himself bound to offer. He confesses himself incompetent, for several reasons, with which he will not trouble the reader, to write well of the genius, charac ter, and life of a true artist.
