I considered arranging these poems in the order of their writing but gave it up be cause I couldn't imagine a reader who would be interested in it. Some of the earliest pieces will be found next to the latest; only a few dates are given. I am not sure I could explain why I think certain poems go with others, in the groups into which the book is divided; at any rate a book of verse in sections is easier to take hold of than an unbroken string of poems. Somewhat more than half of this book appeared as Selected Poems in 1937; it contains all of The Winter Sea.
