Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The present Edition has undergone a careful revision, and has been augmented by thirty-one Supplementary Exercises. Many desirable alterations have been introduced, especially in the substitution of classical for unclassical words, constructions, &c. Useful additions have also been made in the Introduction (pp. vii - xxii), and in the Appendix, especially in Table III.

The method of giving an English paraphrase, side by side with the original passage for translation, has been retained, not as being perfect, but as being preferable to the growing practice of appending a Vocabulary to books for boys, a practice which is open to many grave objections. If a pupil reads the paraphrase merely, without comparing it with the original English, it is not the fault of the pupil only. In any case, the objection applies with far greater force to the method of giving the Latin version of half lines, whole lines, or couplets, which the average boy will most assuredly copy down at once, without even taking the trouble to construe them.
