Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. There is a certain continuity and unity in those Essays which deal primarily with Pro blems rather than with Persons. And the desire, expressed in some quarters, that a line of argument which has cost considerable labour in its elaboration should be exhibited in a volume rather than in scattered periodicals, has been one reason for the present publication.
