Can torture be narrated? It leads the victims of torture to the edge of the abyss, and literally breaks them. Can it be possible to report on this breaking of the self? The numerous and unending debates around torture suggest that it is possible. We are constantly »talking« about torture: in the media, politics, courtrooms - and in literature. Tanja Pröbstl focuses primarily on fictional representations of experiences of torture after 1945: by which means can torture be narrated, or rather, what does the silence of torture tell us? This question is not answered purely using Literary Studies perspectives and methodologies, but rather takes into consideration numerous disciplines, such as Jurisprudence, Psychology, Sociology and Political Science.
