The ambitious bible epic of Alcimus Ecdicius Avitus brings together important episodes taken from the spiritual history of mankind, ranging from the Fall of Man to the Crossing of the Red Sea. This first comprehensive commentary on book III traces the various sources which have influenced the core of the work, the expulsion from paradise. These sources comprise not only the biblical text and its exegesis, but also pagan epic and Christian poetry. Much closer attention is paid to patristic writings than in earlier work on book III, and Ambrose is shown to have exerted a major influence.
