This collection, Tales of Mystery and Imagination encompasses twenty-nine of Poe's finest stories - comprising all the terrifying and bewildering narratives that typify his work. It includes: 'Morella', 'Ligeia', 'The Murders in Rue Morgue', 'The Masque of Red Death', 'The Black Cat' and many others. Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849) was an American poet, writer and literary critic who belonged to the Romantic Movement. He contributed greatly to the genres of horror and science fiction, and his thrilling tales earned him considerable fame during his lifetime, and after his death. Whilst his first work, 'Tamerlane and Other Poems' was published in 1827 in relative obscurity, it was the publication of 'The Raven and Other Poems' in 1845, that brought him instant success. The stories in Tales of Mystery and Imagination are accompanied by the dazzling illustrations of a master of the trade; Harry Clarke (1889 - 1931). Clarke was an Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator - and a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. His drawings were inspired by the Art Nouveax style so typical of this period - and his sinuous lines combined with delicate colouring earned him a reputation as a preeminent illustrator of the 'Golden Age.' Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Poe's captivating narratives. Pook Press celebrates the great 'Golden Age of Illustration' in children's literature - a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children's stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.
