In making a collection from these fascinating stories, long enough to show the reader of this series what their interest con sists in, I have not confined myself to any one of the several Eng lish versions. And even for readers who do not care to go much into the literature of the subject, it will be proper to give a brief account of the way in which these stories have been presented to readers in Europe and America.
