The present essay is written, not with the intention of examining or criticising the conclusions of the learned Treasu1er of the Society of Biblical Archae ology - such a course can only be attempted by a profound student in Asiatic historical research - but to attempt to exhibit his historical theory and his conclusions in a form somewhat more adapted to the general reader with some additional authorities from ancient sources in support of the general argument. The subject, moreover, is one of equal interest to the student of ancient history and to the reader of the Sacred Books.
