The grand divisions into which the book falls are those determined by the course of historical progress. Each one of these divisions is introduced by a Prelim inary Survey of the ground to be covered in the period. It seems theoretically desirable and pedagogically useful to give the pupil beforehand a bird's-eye view of the chief stations along the pathway which he is later to travel step by step. But it is suggested that the teacher take up this Survey with the pupil, read and expound it to him, rather than assign it as a task to be learned Without the previous preparation that explanation by the teacher would give.
