The history of the Spanish Church, like many other histories, begins with legend. The chief legend is that of S. Iago, the story of whose coming to Spain appears in three different forms. These are 1. The legend of 5. James' preaching in Spain during his lifetime. 2. The legend of the transportation of his body to Spain immediately after his martyrdom. 3. The theory of the translation of his bones to Spain in the seventh or eighth century.
