It is a commonplace to say that one discovers things by getting away from them. When I lived at Budapest - and I lived there the first twenty-one years of my life, - I did not know that there ex isted such a thing as Central Europe. I had to come to America to discover Central Europe. Like all awakening to the obvious hitherto obscured by its very obviousness, the discovery meant a revela tion.
