Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Bonaparte's merit: as for myself, I do not even pretend to aspire to the honour of being his biographer. I am only about to relate all that I know of this extra ordinary man, and which I believe I know well - that which I have seen and heard, and of which I have preserved numerous notes. Napoleon Bonaparte was born at Ajaccio, in Corsica, on the 1sth of August, 1769. The name was originally written Buonaparte; but during the first campaign in Italy he dropped the a, merely to render the spelling conformable with the pronunciation, and to abridge his signature.
