The series of which the present volumes form a first instalment is in some measure an outcome of a suggestion made to the Govern ment of India by the Royal Asiatic Society in June, 1900. The Society then pointed out the service which would be rendered to Oriental learning by the issue of a series of volumes bearing upon the history of India, particularly in ancient and medieval times, such as texts or translations of works by native writers, indexes, monographs, dictionaries of proper names, maps, and other materials for historical research. The suggestion was favourably received by the Government of India, and, with the concurrence of the Secretary of State, arrangements have been made for the publication, under the auspices of the Royal Asiatic Society, of an Indian Texts Series' on the lines indicated. Several volumes are already in hand, and will be issued in due course.
