Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The purpose of this book is to furnish a narrative history of England for use in the higher grades of the elementary schools. It traces not only the growth of those principles of liberty and self-government which are the common heritage of the anglo-saxon race, but also the gradual development of the British Empire and its rise to the front rank of the world's manufacturing and commercial powers.
