Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. A few words only are needed by way of introduction to the Second volume. The main authorities for the lives of Sambhaji and Rajaram are the Chitnis Bakhar, the Shedgavkar Bakhar, Khafi Khan, the Musulman works translated by Scott and known as Scott's Deccan, Orme's Fragments and the Parasnis Papers. I must also express my grateful ac knowledgments to Professor Sarkar's History of Aurangzeb, Vol. IV, and to Mr. Irvine's translation of the Storia do Mogor.
