Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Of the execution of the work a few words must be said, to explain certain typographical and other errors, which have not however been deemed of sufficient importance to require a table of errata. The type has been set in great part by Chinese compositors, while the maps have all been engraved by natives. The difficulties to be overcome in editing the work have consequently been much greater than would have been the case had European workmen been employed, and for imperfections in this respect allowance must be solicited.
