Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. There has been hitherto no comprehensive book' in English dealing with the republic of Ecuador, a void which the present volume is intended to fill. The country, as will be shown, is one of peculiar interest from various points of View, whether to the trader, the traveller, or the general reader. T he book is offered as a study in human geography, in the field covered, a theme such as has been the under lying one in the author's various works upon other lands, both in this series and elsewhere.
