Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. In the spring of 1845, Mr. G. Hills, the Publisher, em ployed the compiler to collect and arrange the materials of the present compilation. In the selection and arrangement of matter, the compiler aimed at what the Publisher had proposed should be em braced ih the work, viz: A brief sketch of the manners and customs of the aborigines who once inhabited the region of country within the several counties named - Notices of the earliest settlements by the whites - of the Germans and I r ish - Indian massacres - accounts of the several forts; and such other facts as are deemed necessary to understand the early history of this portion of Pennsylvania.
