Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. As the requirements of our American schools call for a treatment of the period from that time to Charlemagne, such an addition will be found in Chap ters XXVIII - XXXII. In these chapters there is no claim to originality, even of presentation, owing to the extreme con ciseness necessary.
