Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. This narrative, it is hoped, will serve to remove the impression which prevails among a not inconsiderable section of the British public that the Army commanded and handled with such consummate skill by Lord Allenby in Palestine had a comparatively simple task. I have endeavoured to set out several matters in order to prove the contention of every superior officer who served two years or more with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force that General Allenby gave the Allies a victory at least as great as any Commander, and that when the historian can view the world-war as a whole, and has the full facts on which to base a calm and dispassionate judgment, he will bracket Allenby's name with any he selects as being responsible for the strategy which ended the struggle.<br><br>The public in Britain and America still talks of the capture of Jerusalem as being the military event which will make Lord Allenby's name remembered for all time. Sentiment, of course, is responsible for it, and the deep veneration for the Holy City which is felt by people professing three of the great religions of the world, will make it easy for Jerusalem to be recalled when the names of much sterner battles are forgotten.
