Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. This account of the Five Australian Divisions does not pretend to be history. There are doubtless details missing, details incorrect inevitable in such an account, written mostly from current notes made in the field. Much of the earlier part Of the story has appeared in disjointed form in letters from the front to the Australian press. The matter of those letters, however, has been edited and expanded to make the story coherent, and the mention of particular Battalions and Brigades is now possible. For the big summer campaign I had to rely upon the recollections of brigade and divisional Staff Officers and narratives in the military diaries, owing to an accident in July which entailed two months' lying in hospital; and my grateful acknowledgments are due to those sources of the latter end of the Story. There is no attempt here to tell of the work of the Australian airmen, who, except the Photographic Squadron, are detached from the ordinary operations of the Australian Corps. The same remark applies to the miners in the Australian Tunnelling Companies.
