With this force Slocum was instructed to operate against the Confederate line of communications while the Army of the Potomac attacked in front. But Gen. Halleck, the commander - in-chief, refused Hooker's request that this garrison be placed at his disposal. Gen. Hooker there upon resigned and Gen. Meade was appointed his suc cessor.
