The question as to the mutual relationship between these has not been clearly settled. Indeed, it seems to be quite certain that their common origin must be sought, not in New England, but in the mother country. There were, evidently, a number of families, which, though they may have been related in England, became distinct sources of genealogical descent in this part of the world.
