Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. In 1860 the State Of New York published a volume containing a list of marriage licenses then on record in the Office of the Secretary Of State, Albany. The licenses were issued under the seal of the Prerogative Court, and acted as a dispensation from the proclamation of banns, when it was inconvenient or impossible to comply with the general usage. The information given by the license, and unfortunately not printed in the volume published by the State, consisted of the town of residence and occupation of the parties to the marriage, and the prospective bride was designated as Spinster or Widow as the case might be. In the fire at the Capitol, March 29, 1911, a number of the original manuscript volumes were saved, but all badly burned.
