Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The recent very general interest in poetics has led me to prepare these translations Of the essays on poetry by Plu tarch and Basil the Great, in the hope that they may prove useful to students of literature. Although they were not epoch-making, these essays are worthy of consideration, for, besides their intrinsic value, they mark interesting stages in the history of poetic criticism.
