Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. When in common language, a man says, I repent of such an action, he is undersd to say, I am sorry for having done it. The feeling is familiar to all of us. How often does the man of dissipation prove this sense of the word repentance, when he awakes in the morning, and, oppressed by the languor of his ex hansted faculties, looks back with remorse on the fin] lies and profligacies of the night that is past? How often does the man of unguarded conversation prove it, when he thinks of the friends whose feelings he has wounded by some hasty utterance which he cannot recall? How often is it pmved by the man of businem, when he reflects' on the rash engagement which ties him down to a losing speculation? All these people would be perfectly understood when they say, W'e repent of these doings. The word repentance so applied is about equivalent to the word regret. There are several passages in the New Testament where this is the undoubted sense of the word repentance. In Matt. 27: 3. The wretched Judas repented himself of his treachery; and surely, when we think of the awful denunciation uttered by our Savior against the man who should betray him, that it were better for him if he had not been born, we shall never confound the repentance which Judas experienced with that repentance which is unto salvation.
