Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The plan of the work may be stated in few words. The principle on which the whole argument rests, is first presented in general terms; and then confirmed and elucidated through a series of inductive proofs. The Introduction contains the announcement of that fundamental prin ciple; the proofs of it will be found in the succeeding sections. With a view to the preservation of order, several topics of im portance have been transferred to the Ap pendix, at the close of the second volume.
