Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. There has not been given much attention by the good people of the United States to the arguments by which the doctrines and practices of the Church of Rome have been assailed from the one side and defended from the other. The reasons for this are not discreditable to a young Nation busily engaged in shaping its own life, and satisfied that religious convictions are a man's own affair and need not be discussed by his neighbors. There is, however, an increasing attention being given to History, and the element of Religion cannot be ruled out of historical investigation. It is, moreover, being shown to thoughtful students of the questions of the day, that there are such religious convictions as do affect others than those who hold them, and that they become a factor in social and political life. We rejoice in freedom, but we must scrutinize forces, even though religious, that appear to be opposed to accepted ideas of human freedom.
