The first of the two treatises, composing this little volume, appeared in the Indian Antiquary 1902 and is reprinted here with the kind permission of the editor Sir Richard Temple. The appendix On the Philosophy of the Vedanta was originally an address delivered before the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, the 25 February 1893.

Both treatises complete in some way each other, the first being a very short summary of the history of the Indian philosophy, the second giving a concise idea of that religious and philosophical system, which more than any other is ruling in India even in our days.
