Food insecurity-the condition of having inadequate food due to a lack of resources-affected roughly 1 in 10 Americans in 2019, and this number increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chapter 1 looks at the food insecurity in America. Although housing assistance programs are designed to free financial resources associated with housing cost burden, household food insecurity is still prominent among low-income, HUD-assisted adults as reported in Chapter 2. Chapters 3 and 4 summarize research on the extent and effects of food insecurity among college students and recent efforts by students, institutions, and governments to reduce food insecurity among this population. Global food security assistance from the United States and other countries and organizations is discussed in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 summarizes how the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may affect global food security needs.
