It is the belief of the author of the succeeding pages of this book that the Christian religion must always be not merely one, but the foremost, force in the development of occidental civilization: This narrative, then, is an illustration to the point of the author's belief. The upbuilding of grand Christian civilizations, founded on the conversion of the individual natives, and on the Christian character of the individual settlers, in the tropical parts of the world, is the great task of the immediate future.
