Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The omission of references is rightly open to serious criticism, but it was felt that they would have to be so numerous as to unduly increase the size of the book. The short Bibliography at the end will, however, indicate to the serious student some of the more important books to consult.
