The Second Canadian Conference on Education, held in Montreal, was the result of several years of determined effort by representatives of organizations concerned directly or indirectly with education, and convinced that "e;wider public understanding of Canada's educational needs and problems would be a major step towards their solution."e; The Conference brought together some two thousand people for concentrated sessions on topics in education, which is of vital concern to educators and to the laymen who endeavour to support their efforts. The delegates represented school and university teachers and administrators, school boards, parent-teacher associations, students, churches, employers, trade unions, the professions and other groups interested in education. They came from all the provinces and territories. Most of the provincial ministers and every deputy minister responsible for education attended. Never before had there been held such a full-scale gathering of citizens prepared to study the tasks of home, school and community in preparing youth for life in the atomic age. The special point of view of French-speaking Canadians was clearly and completely expressed. This book includes extras from the speeches and discussions in each language, so that readers may follow the whole proceedings in either English or French. The Report follows the organization of the Conference, which concerned itself with nine general themes. The Conference was a three-tiered structure. Following the opening session, plenary sessions examined the basic question "e;What does our society expect to achieve through education?"e; Delegates then met in seven concurrent forums, each of which divided, after an initial session, into small work-groups. Group findings and recommendations were then reported to the closing plenary session. Dr. Francis J. Leddy summed up the Conference and the spirit of the delegates when he said that they were "e;satisfied with much that has been done, determined to make advantageous changes, and deeply aware that Canada will not be left untouched by the world-wide revolution in politics and science, which is now in full tide and will sweep on through our life-time."e;Le deuxime Confrence canadienne sur l'ducation, tenue Montral, a t le rsultat de plusieurs annes d'efforts rsolus par les reprsentants d'organisations intresses directement ou indirectement l'ducation, et convaincues qu'une plus grande comprhension par le public des besoins et problmes ducatifs constitueraient un pas important vers leur solution. >>
