Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. For the convenience of readers, a list of the territorial possessions of the House of Hohenzollern in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries has been added in Appendix II., and their geographical position has been indicated on the map at the end of the volume. And since the author's illustrations of his general thesis are taken chiefly from German and Prussian history, a number of notes have been added throughout to explain technical expressions and sug gest English parallels. The view of the eighteenth century taken by the author should be compared with that of the late Sir John Seeley, in le Expansion of England.
