But Abraham Wood was not the earliest settler at Fort Henry; for, by the same Act under which the first six hundred acres of land were granted to him in 1646, it appears that the land on which the fort stood, together with part of the six hundred adjacent acres, had previously been owned by one Thomas Pitt, from whom it was purchased by the House of Bur gesses for the purpose, evidently, of transferring it to Wood. Thomas Pitt may therefore be regarded as the first legal proprietor of the present City's site.
