Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. In submitting this volume to the public, the author takes occasion to say, that its preparation was more than a labor of love, for difficulties met him at every step.

No one had ever before written, or attempted to write, the history of Doylestown. The ground lay fallow; there was no material at hand to write it from, but it had to be picked up, a bit here and a bit there, like the gathering of threads to weave into a piece of cloth, and was the work of several years.

Among other authorities consulted, were the bound files of the Bucks County Intelligencer and Doylestown Democrat, reaching through a century. We have related events consecutively, and spoken of persons and things correctly; but, to make them clear, have occasionally resorted to repetition. They who declined to open their storehouse of the past, must not blame the author for inaccuracy. Under the circumstances, we have made the best possible use of our material, and, if we have accomplished nothing more, we have saved valuable material for the future historian.
