The first school house within what were the limits of the city when it recovered its charter was built in the Village of Salina, now the First Ward of the city, in 1805. It was at first seated with the faces of the pupils toward the wall, according to the fashion of those days, but was afterward changed for pupils to face the centre of the room, where the stove was placed with the teacher's table at the end of the room, by the entrance. The town of Salina was incorporated in 1809, and this, being the first organized district, was designated No. 1.
