Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. To the explorers in the late 19th century, such stupendous mountain scenery was, if not eternal, at least esthetically sublime and spiritual. Images of eternity were often used in the early attempts to describe the North Cascades. They are also present in much subsequent mountain climbing literature. Yet it is the shortness of human memory and history that contributes this illusion of mountain eternities.
