Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Algebra uses the same number symbols as arithmetic, namely, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc., but from time to time, as need for them arises, various new symbols will be introduced. While arith~ metic, to a limited extent, uses letters to represent numbers, their use is a distinctive feature of algebra.
