Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The testing of optical apparatus, as instituted by the Royal Society at Kew, would be greatly improved by recognizing it, and the marked defects in the scales of our Ordnance Maps, in the production of which photographic processes are employed.
